A point mutation in the 23S rRNA gene causes macrolide and lincosamide resistance in Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. The possible occurrence of a similar mutation in Brachyspira pilosicoli was studied and the MICs of six antimicrobial agents for Swedish field isolates of B. pilosicoli were determined.

Brachyspira pilosicoli (strain ATCC BAA-1826 / 95/1000) is an anaerobic Gram-negative bacterium which colonizes the large intestine of various species of birds and mammals, including humans. It causes "intestinal spirochetosis", a condition characterized by mild colitis, diarrhea and reduced growth.

The study was succesfull for developing spesific quantitative real-time PCR method for detection of Brachyspira pilosicoli. The quantification limits were 1 x 106 B. pilosicoli bacteria/g feces. The method sensitivity was limited by great amount of PCR inhibitors in the Sep 30, 2019 hyodysenteriae and B. pilosicoli in Polish pig herds. Moreover, associations between the presence of diarrhea or other intestinal pathogens and  Brachyspira pilosicoli, which colonizes many animal species, is common (~30%) in the feces of people from developing countries, including Australian Aborigines,   Jan 12, 2012 Most Brachyspira species have a restricted host range, whereas Brachyspira ( formerly Serpulina) pilosicoli colonizes a variety of animal and  Abstract. 2018-01-01 Brachyspira pilosicoli is a Gram-negative, spiral shaped bacterium. It is an anaerobic spirochaete, closely related to Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. The bacterium is loosely coiled and is 6-11µm long (Figure 1). It is only weakly haemolytic in contrast to B. hyodysenteriae.
